About Me

Thanks for visiting my site, my name is Greg also known on the air as M0YGL formerly M7IVE and 2E0YGL. I live in Bletchley, United Kingdom not very far away from GB3RS. I have had a keen interest in radio and electronics since a young age, although becoming licensed is very recent for me. My QRZ.com page can be found here

As a child I was always taking electronic items apart and trying to understand how they work, I was also an avid reader of Practical and Wireless either spending my pocket money on electronic kits and components from Maplin Electronics or on the newest issue of Practical and Wireless. My first introduction to radio was from my dad who built me a Crystal Set which I still have although it’s now missing the air gapped variable capacitor, I recall using that for a project many years ago and no idea where it went to. I have fond memories of listening to stations with a long wire coming from the attic using a crystal ear piece. Some of my other projects included building receivers with the very popular MK484 receiver IC in the TO-92 package which was the successor to the ZN414. If I recall correctly I used to source the MK484 from Kanga Electronics sending money in the post and shortly after receiving the ordered goods.

I was first Licensed in December 2024 as M7IVE after following the fantastic Essex Ham Foundation Online course, massive thanks to Pete and his team for putting this together. It was just by chance I saw this course advertised on Facebook in the Milton Keynes Amateur Radio Facebook group. Had I not seen it maybe I still would not have been licensed. After passing my foundation exam I was very fortunate to be introduced to Matt Wood (G7HMV) who is currently chairman of the Verulam Amateur Radio Club, being a newbie on the air I did not really know how to get started, it seemed I was unable to access any repeaters in my local area from my location on a hand held. Matt helped me get setup with MB7IJT and subsequently made my first QSO’s on the very popular and well-known FreeSTAR network. Matt was also a massive help in helping me achieve my intermediate exam pass and subsequently my full exam pass, had I not had the encouragement from him maybe I would still be operating as M7IVE.

I should also mention some of the great people from the Verulam Amateur Radio Club who have helped me to pass my Intermediate and Full, shout-out to Matt Melling (G4IYT) Jeremy Turner (M1CVZ) Will Moverley (2E0OWM) and everyone else who has helped me understand concepts or answered my silly questions.

The equipment I use is mainly from Yaesu including an FT-991A, FT-891, FT5DE but I also have a Xiegu X6100 for ultra portable operations as I am able to run it from a USB-C powerbank using a USB-C PD cable. I am very fond of the digimodes such as PSK31, RTTY, Olivia and others, I am mainly found on the 20m and 40m bands although I am planning to get setup for other bands too.

Thanks for reading and hope to work you soon.
